Sony’s backlit CMOS image sensor improves sensitivity and noise reduction, the key factors for improving image quality. This while radically realigning the fundamental pixel structure, from front to back lighting. It has kept the advantages of CMOS image sensors such as low power consumption and fast operation.<\/p>\n
With a conventional front lighting structure, the metal wiring and transistors on the surface of the silicon substrate, which form the light-sensitive region of the sensor (photodiode), hinder photon collection by the on-chip lens. A backlit structure minimizes degradation in optical corner response sensitivity, while also increasing the amount of light entering each pixel. This is due to the lack of obstacles, such as metal wiring and transistors, that have been moved to the back of the silicon substrate.<\/p>\n
Sony has recently developed a unique photodiode structure and an on-chip lens. It is optimized for backlit structures, which achieve higher sensitivity and lower random noise without light. This is done by reducing noise, dark power and defective pixels compared to the conventional front-lit structure.<\/p>\n

While these two cameras share very similar pixel sizes (5.94 um vs. 5.96 um), the ‘well depth’ capability of the ZWO ASI2400MC-PRO is 100 ke, which is 132% of another full-frame ASI camera ASI128MC Pro. The ZWO ASI2400MC-PRO thus comes with an ultra-high dynamic range of up to 14 stops. In addition, the chance of overexposure is reduced, with a richer color gradation. When the gain value is 140, the magic HCG high-gain mode is turned on, the readout noise is significantly reduced (as low as 1.1e) and the dynamic range remains essentially unchanged.<\/p>\n

The ZWO ASI2400MC PRO comes with a polyamide heating element that can prevent dew problems. This anti-dew heating element fits completely into the protective window. The power of the anti-dew heater against heat is about 5W and can be turned off in software to save energy.<\/p>\n
The ZWO ASI2400MC-PRO is equipped with USB 3.0 transmission interface and built-in 256MB DDR3 cache to ensure stable and secure data transfer. At long exposures, it effectively avoids dropping frames. In addition, the glow effect caused by slow reading speed is greatly reduced.<\/p>\n
